Notting Hill Garden, London
The design intention for our Notting Hill Garden focussed on the maximisation of light within this north facing space. We wanted afternoon and evening light to be a strong force within the garden between late spring and early autumn. The lower level of the garden is simple and uncluttered, a paved space to allow the maximum light into the interior living area and to provide a comfortable space for outdoor cooking.
The main space is devoted to outdoor living and socialising – a dining area for friends and for family enjoyment but flexible too. The upper level is designed for relaxation, seating, or lounging in the late afternoon sun.
Crossland Hill hard York stone was specified for the lower terrace and steps, with Cotswold gravel used for the more informal area. The existing brick walls were cleaned and repaired as they are typical of London gardens, helping to create a sense of place. This language was replicated in the new retaining walls, with specimen planting designed for privacy. Pleached Carpinus and multi-stemmed Prunus are used for decorative effect. Planting in the main beds is a series of Taxus domes of varying sizes interspersed with mixtures of perennials and ornamental grasses.
