Ghyll House, Sussex
Architects: Strom Architects
This large detached house by Strom Architects is set within a 15,000m2 plot in an area of outstanding natural beauty in East Sussex. The owners chose the site as the location for their forever home, inspired by the expansive views of the surrounding countryside.
Our wilder, contextual design respects and enhances the relationships between architecture and landscape, and was integral to securing planning permission.
The approach amplifies the sense of space with simple, bold gestures that embrace the location at a variety of scales. The surrounding landscape of the Weald becomes a significant part of the composition with lots of destination spaces for relaxation or retreat located around the garden and house. We removed landscape elements that didn’t fit their surroundings, adding more diverse tree-planting, reintroducing an orchard and extending an existing wildflower meadow right up to the edge of a new swimming pool.
The design supports and improves wildlife habitat and includes the relocation and restoration of a dilapidated pond.
