Between Heaven and Earth, Shenzhen Garden Festival 2021

Our competition-winning design was inspired by Shenzhen’s rapid development, and imagines a transient space between its past and future.  Everyday elements of landscape create a composition of textural planting, water, light and shadow, representing Shenzhen’s unique character and exploring the relationship between man, nature and technology.

A continuous flow of water helps unify the landscape, with water channels reflecting their  surroundings and merging into dense woodland. Within this, paved surfaces create informal areas for relaxation. Woodland edge planting softens into the wider landscape and a lower planting mix spills over, running through the entire garden.

The connections between man and nature are accented by a random pattern of tall masts, which sway gently in the breeze and add height and drama to the space. Each mast carries either a small LED or a misting spray further animating this element and allowing the garden to be enjoyed after dark.

“Garden spaces should evoke all the senses. Between Heaven and Earth is a glorious stirring of everything we have within”.

“A beautiful concept, seamlessly anchoring nature and contemporary design. A visual delight!
